Forest School Facilitator - POSITION FILLED

Part-Time Position: January 9th, 2024 - June 7, 2024

☐  Outdoor Connections Forest School is seeking a passionate, self-motivated, nature-loving part-time educator to join our team for the 2024 school year. This is a team-teaching position for approximately 12-18 instructional hours per week (paid 7 hours/full day for site assessment, program preparation, yurt clean up etc).  

☐  The successful candidate will be working alongside an experienced forest school facilitator, organizing and implementing child-led play-based forest school program for children aged 3-7 years.  This position will require you to co-facilitate school-aged programs.

Overview

☐  Outdoor Connections Forest School is a play-based, place-based, child-led, outdoor forest school program for preschool children and school age children.  We focus on child-led learning and fostering environmental stewardship.  

☐  We follow a September to June school calendar, offering fall, winter and spring programs. Our programs are delivered on 60 acres of private land 12 km south of Fernie, BC.  We use a 20 ft. yurt as an indoor warming space, and storage for school materials.

☐  We operate preschool classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a school-age programs on Wednesdaysand Fridays.

☐  O.C. Forest School offers employee status for all staff.  

Qualifications

☐  Must have experience working with children in outdoor environments.  

☐  Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

☐  Must be physically fit, able to dig, climb, hike, carry firewood.  

☐  Must have reliable transportation.

☐  Current First-Aid certificate

☐  Must have a Clear Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector check.

☐  Can oversee groups of children and have strong risk management skills.

☐  Completion of the Forest and Nature School practitioner course is a strong asset but not required.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

☐  Alongside co-teacher, plan and implement a child-led forest school program.  Be conscious of your involvement during free-play times and intervene when appropriate.

☐  Ensure the safety of all children during their forest play.

☐  Support the benefits of risk-taking, movement and physical development.

☐  Maintain a positive attitude regardless of the weather and be physically able to carry out facilitating duties in all types of terrain.
